Brexit (i.e. the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union), has been met with little joy and tons of criticism in the UK capital, London. The result of the 2016 referendum was opposed by young people and accepted with skepticism by many businesses. But also the creative industry did not remained silent.

The last voice of protest to raise against Brexit is that of the London-based design studio Pentagram, which self initiated a project called 'Acid Brexit': a tool for protest that uses music and animation.

The project is born from the collaboration between the japanese artist Yuri Suzuki and the brothers Luke Powell and Jody Hudson-Powell and it started last year with the aims of protesting Brexit along with the increasing anti-immigration stances in the country and among the conservative party. The outcome was Acid-Brexit, 3 anti-Brexit music records based on real speeches that marked the political debate over Brexit, accompained by an animated video that sees an upside-down smile, symbol of Acid Music, dancing in the historic center of London.

This project is a tool for protest. Music is a powerful mean to communicate and express political stances and manifestos, in particular for young people. Indeed, one of the sources of inspiration for the project was Charivari, the ancient French tradition of the making sounds as a form of protest, against or for change.

But among various genres, the choice ended up being Acid Music because by nature it is protest music. Born in Chicago during the 90s, it soon spread across the UK. Although Margaret Thatcher, known as the 'Iron Lady', tried to ban it, at the time it became a tool for younger people to express their political opinions and dissatisfaction. Accordingly, it is now used as a tool to protest Brexit.

All the tracks can be downloaded for free. The hope is that they might be used and mashed up during parties in order to support the protest.
